Zoom – how it works (EN)

We run our virtual training sessions, the «Digital Training Days», «Lernwerkstatt-Live-Webinars», online information sessions und online consultations via the Zoom video conferencing system. This is a simple system that is free of charge.

  • To join, you will need a laptop with a working camera and microphone.
  • You must participate in the lessons with both video and audio.
  • If necessary, you can also join using a tablet, although we do not recommend this.
  • Although Zoom can be installed on a mobile phone, your options are very limited during a virtual course day, so participation via a mobile phone is not possible.
  • Ideally, you should have a headset to ensure high audio quality.
  • We recommend using personal devices. You may face restrictions on installing Zoom on work devices.
  • You can register for a short test meeting with our office.
  • We would appreciate it if you would follow our netiquette (EN).

Common problems

Installation not possible:

  • Your work device does not allow Zoom to be installed.
  • You are using an out-of-date browser.

The other meeting participants cannot see or hear you:

  • You selected the wrong options when joining the Zoom meeting; the correct ones are:
    - Join with video
    - Join audio via computer
  • You have covered the camera on your device.
  • You have disabled the camera and/or microphone in your device’s system settings.
  • You are using two video conferencing systems, such as “Teams” and/or “Zoom,” at the same time. Your camera cannot be used by two systems simultaneously.

The video and/or audio are stuttering.

  • Your device is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Connect it directly to the Internet using a cable.
  • You are using a virtual background. This requires additional data resources. Please do not use a virtual background.

Support:

Support Outside Business Hours:

  • For in-person courses, contact your course instructor. You can find their contact information on myLWO.
  • For webinars, call the emergency number listed on the invitation.
  • For online information sessions, call the course instructor’s phone number listed on the invitation.

How secure is Zoom?

  • Zoom runs very smoothly.
  • Data is transmitted in encrypted form.
  • We recommend using a new meeting ID and password for each meeting.
  • If you have your own Zoom account, use a strong password that you don’t use anywhere else. A strong password should be at least eight characters long (preferably more) and contain letters, numbers, and special characters. Keep the software up to date by installing updates.

As with any online activity, the following also applies to Zoom:

  • The manufacturers’ privacy policies are not always user-friendly.
  • Software can be hacked.

Whenever you’re online, we recommend:

  • Do not post sensitive data online.
